The Caribbean

This is a region that consists of the Caribbean sea, the islands and the surrounding coasts. It comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays forming island arcs.

The Caribbean islands are part of the West Indies which includes the Greater, Lesser and Leeward Antilles, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and the Lucayan Archipelago.

Many of these islands are historically and culturally part of the British West Indies.

A holiday in the Caribbean has more to offer than sun, sea and sand.  It goes without saying that you will find dazzling, turquoise shores, velvety, pristine beaches and weather that is year round warmth and sunshine.  But you will also be able to snorkel or scuba dive around the most beautiful rainbow coloured reefs.

Do you fancy swimming with the stringrays in the Cayman Islands, dolphins in the Bahamas or take a submarine tour in Aruba? You could even try surfing on the east coast of Barbados, or a more sedate turtle watch in Nevis.

Why not hike through the El Yunque rain forest in Puerto Rico, or zip wire in the mountainous island of St. Lucia.  Take the old sugar cane train in St. Kitts, enjoy a yoga retreat in Turks & Caicos, or learn about volcanoes in Montserrat.  You could do a bit of ‘twitching’ in Trinidad and view the bearded bellbird and scarlet ibis Trinidad’s national bird.

Harrisons Cave in Barbados promises a magnificent display of stalagmites and stalactites in its crystallised limestone cavern.  Bermuda has beautiful empty beaches where you can saddle up and ride through the sand dunes in the early morning.

In the 17th century the Bahamas were rife with pirates, families can try their hand at being a pirate at the interactive Pirate museum in Nassau.  There are old, original plantation buildings to visit in Anguilla, and in Grenada visit the Rum distillery or sip a martini at the Golden Eye Hotel, Jamaica.  Why not learn to sail in the BVIs, beginner courses available in Tortola. Or party the night away and practice your samba skills on the sizzling island of Cuba.

If that seems too much like hard work, just sit back, unwind and relax at one of the many luxurious, first class resorts that are on offer at these wonderfully beguiling and magical islands.
